1)Vocal Cord Paralysis: "The larynx, or voice box, does three primary jobs: it allows air to get to the lungs, it protects the lungs from food going down the wrong chute and it produces voice," says Joel H. Blumin, Medical College of Wisconsin. In vocal cord paralysis, nerve damage to the muscles of the voice box causes one or both of the vocal cords to malfunction.
Causes: There may be many causes of vocal cord paralysis. Some of them are:
- Infection
- Injury to the nerve that control vocal cords during surgery
- Trauma to the neck or chest
- Skull tumors
Treatment: Treatment for vocal cord paralysis can include voice therapy, surgery or both. Voice therapy involves exercising to help strengthen vocal cords and improve breath control during speech. The decision to have surgery depends upon symptoms, cause of paralysis, position of paralyzed vocal cords and prognosis for recovery.
2)Alzheimer’s disease: Dementia is a brain disorder that seriously affects person’s ability to carry out daily activities. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. People who have family history of the disease have four times more risk of suffering from the disease.
Symptoms: Disease disrupts nerve cells causing them to stop working, loose connection with other nerve cells and ultimately die. Some of the noticeable symptoms are memory failure, personality change and having problems in carrying out daily activities. Patients have trouble remembering names of the person they know. Patients may not recognize family members or have trouble while speaking, reading or writing.
Treatment: Because there is no cure, disease is usually controlled with help of medications in combination with various non-drug strategies. Drugs available today are used to manage cognitive symptoms of the disease like change in thinking, memory and perception. They cannot stop the disease, but they can slow down the symptoms. Drug therapy is useful in early stages. Non-pharmacological aspect is used to manage problematic behavior which includes home modifications and use of communication techniques. These drugs might include a variety of types of drugs broadly categorized as anti-agitation drugs.
