New Online Continuing Education Course on Near-Death Experience Added to HealthForumOnline's Library for Mental Health Professionals

Posted By: Anonymous | Posted On: Sep 28,2009 18:30 pm | View: 46 HealthForumOnline (HFO) has added a new online continuing education (CE/CEU) course entitled Near-Death Experiences: Implications for Clinical Practice to their growing library of nationally-approved CE courses for mental health professionals, nurses and allied healthcare workers. Near-Death Experience (NDE) represents an altered state of consciousness that may occur close to death in a situation of physical or emotional crisis that includes powerful transcendent and mystical elements linked to neurochemical/neuroanatomical causes. Approximately 10-40% of those who survive a clinical crisis report a NDE. The actual occurrence of NDEs may be significantly higher, since many NDErs appear reluctant to share their experience for fear of being labeled mentally ill by untrained healthcare professionals who may initially discount and even pathologize their experience due to a lack a sufficient knowledge and associated clinical skills regarding this phenomenon. This online CE/CEU course synthesizes 33 years of evidence-based research on NDEs, including its frequency, etiology, DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria, assessment strategies, and short-term and long-term effects. Lastly, clinical implications for treatment are addressed along with important barriers to treatment that can occur when co-morbid Axis I or Axis II DSM-IV-TR disorders exist. Each of HFO's over 65 CE/CEU courses are fast, convenient and especially cost-effective as health professionals have free ongoing access to course updates beyond completion of the CE activity. The complexity of the brain, and in particular the visual cortex, is so overwhelming that, in the last decades, progress toward circuit-based understanding of brain design has all but come to a halt. Part of the problem is that the usual theoretical methods, including computer simulation and mathematical analysis, are not very well suited to the sp
