The Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) congratulates all members of the United States Senate who voted today to pass The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. AFA believes the historic act includes several provisions that will be particularly helpful to individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, and their family caregivers, including home-based coordinated care for high-cost Medicare beneficiaries with two or more chronic conditions, and inclusion of "detection of any cognitive impairment" in the new annual wellness exam for Medicare beneficiaries.

Kinea Design Develops Sensorized Biomechatronic Technology for DARPA Revolutionizing Prosthetics 2009 Program
Kinea Design, a research and engineering design firm specializing in Human Interactive Mechatronics, has developed new biomechatronic technology that will return feeling and function to arm amputees. The innovations are part of the multinational Revolutionizing Prosthetics 2009 (RP 2009) initiative sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). RP 2009 is developing an advanced electromechanical prosthesis that will mimic the sensory-motor capabilities of a natural hand and arm and enable intuitive, thought-controlled movement of an artificial limb. The work of Kinea Design and other RP 2009 collaborators will appear in the January 2010 issue of National Geographic in an article that examines the science and technology of embedded bionic devices.
