Never-Ending Asthma
Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows airways. This causes recurring period of wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The coughing often occurs at night or early in the morning. In asthma, airways are inflamed and thus react to allergens and irritants that are present in the environment. On exposure to the environmental triggers, airways become narrower and less air goes to lungs.
Vitamins And Risk For Asthma
“Parents who are concerned about a recent study linking the use of vitamins to increased risk for asthma and allergies in their children should continue to follow their doctor's advice when it comes to dietary supplements”, said the study authors and a medical college of Wisconsin allergist. By analyzing data from more than 8000 infants it was found that African American children who were given vitamins during first six month were 30% more likely to suffer from disease than white children.
Antioxidant vitamins i.e. vitamin A, C, E are linked clearly with severity of asthma. According to the National Asthma Campaign incidence of asthma has been increasing steadily in the western world and is the most common long term condition in the UK today. The scientists believe that vitamins may cause cell changes that increase the chances of an allergic reaction, but yet there is no proof of it. Modern lifestyles including pollution also contributed to increase the risk of asthma. More than five million people in the UK have asthma and one in 10 children is affected.
According to researchers, pregnant women who take Mediterranean diet may save their children from allergies and asthma. The team of researchers from university of Crete studied 468 mothers and their children from pregnancy to six and a half years after the birth. They found that asthma and allergies were significantly less common in children whose mothers ate lots of vegetables, fruit, nuts and fish during pregnancy.
Asthma Treatment: Long-term medication is taken daily to maintain control of persistent asthma. They primarily serve to control airway inflammation. Quick-relief medication is taken in case of acute asthma attack. Many asthma medications can be taken orally or by inhalation. Metered-dose inhalers (MDI) are most common. Dry powder inhalers are also becoming popular. Nebulizer therapy is used for patients who cannot use MDI’s because of difficulties with coordination. Asthma cannot be cured but can be controlled by proper medication.
